Primers are the foundation of a coating system, ensuring the adhesion, durability, and surface finish of subsequent coatings. Whether it's a UV primer or a PU primer, resin selection is crucial to meeting performance requirements. Solid acrylic resins have become a key raw material class in primer formulations due to their excellent balance of adhesion, clarity, durability, and compatibility with various curing systems.
Solid acrylic resins, when used in UV primers, offer the following properties:
These properties make solid acrylic resins particularly valuable in wood finishing, electronic component coatings, and plastic coatings (UV coatings used as topcoats).
For polyurethane (PU) primers, solid acrylic resins (particularly hydroxy-functional grades) are often chosen for their ability to chemically react with isocyanates to form a cross-linked film. Their advantages include:
These properties make solid acrylic resins indispensable in high-performance coatings, where toughness, durability, and protective properties are crucial.
Product Description
SA-539 is a thermoplastic solid acrylic resin based on MMA and n-BMA. It features a medium molecular weight (80,000), a high Tg (84°C), a low acid number (≤3), and a hydroxyl number of 27.5, offering numerous advantages for UV and PU primers. SA-539's high gloss, hardness, and abrasion resistance provide a durable, smooth base layer, enhancing the appearance and protective properties of UV topcoats. Solvent based acrylic resin has strong adhesion and excellent dispersibility ensure uniform film formation and compatibility with metal or pigment systems. The hydroxyl functional groups chemically crosslink with the isocyanate in PU primers, providing excellent hardness, flexibility, and long-term chemical resistance. Solid acrylic resin SA-539 also exhibits good alcohol resistance, weathering resistance, and non-yellowing stability, enabling primers to achieve superior adhesion, durability, and aesthetics in demanding applications such as automotive, appliance, and plastic coatings.
